Cullis Family History

This Cullis history opens in Pershore, Worcestershire, England, for there we found our earliest established Cullis ancestors to this time Isaac and Ester Cullis.

Pershore, is a little town in the County of Worcestershire, and stands on the River Avon, west of the Vale of Evesham. Both old (17th Century) and newer bridges span the river, and the district is noted for its Pershore Plums. Springtime blossom in the local orchards provides a beautiful and spectacular sight.

The old Norman to 14th century Abbey Church contains a 13th century presbytery with remarkable vaulting, and carries an interesting tower. Additionally little St. Andrew's Church at the rear of the Abbey houses 12th to 15th century work, and has a leaning north nave arcade.

Many 18th century houses feature in the town. A notable modern building, situated south-east of the town, houses the Institute of Horticulture.

The 1000th anniversary of the town's original charter, given to the Abbey by King Elgar, was celebrated in 1972. Pershore is situated about ten miles to the south-east of the City of Worcester, and about sixty-five miles north, and a little east of the City of Bristol, where successive generations of the Cullis family were later to live.

Isaac Cullis was a victualler in Pershore. There has to date been found no records of his parents, nor of his wife Ester's maiden surname, and the dates of their births, deaths or marriages, but there has been found recorded information of the births of three children. There may well have been others.
